Santorum warns of “gathering storm”

Senator Rick Santorum will launch a series of Pennsylvania speeches tomorrow in which he talks about what he calls “a gathering storm.” Santorum has often said he thinks we live in a time like no other and he has challenged many to acknowledge the threats America faces today. I have always thought this was his strong suit — speaking about the threats of Islamo-fascism in morally unambiguous terms.

SANTORUM TO ADDRESS GROWING THREAT AGAINST AMERICA; DELIVER MAJOR SPEECH ON “THE GATHERING STORM”
Santorum will make stops in Allegheny, Berks, Cambria, Erie, Lebanon and Lehigh Counties.

Pittsburgh – In a two-day tour across the Commonwealth, U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) will address the growing threat of our enemies in a speech that will define the unique challenges that confront the United States as we fight another global war. Now more than ever, Senator Santorum believes that we need to study the past, learn from events and take proactive measures to protect our freedoms in order to provide a safer world in which to exercise those freedoms.

Throughout Senator Santorum’s tenure in the United States Senate, he has introduced legislation and resolutions that seek to address concerns with countries that threaten our country, specifically Iran and Syria. Our national security is an issue that should not be limited by politics, which is why Senator Santorum has frequently sought bipartisan support for his efforts.

“THE GATHERING STORM”
SPEECH DELIVERED BY
SENATOR RICK SANTORUM
OCTOBER 26-27, 2006

Topline Message Points

Rick Santorum is fighting to secure our homeland.
Rick fought to give our law enforcement personnel all of the necessary legal tools to find and capture terrorists before they can strike us. He supports the enemy surveillance program that allows us to intercept terrorist calls to their contacts in the United States.
As a member of the Armed Services committee, Rick was a leader in developing missile defense technology to protect Israel, our allies, our soldiers, and our homeland.
Rick opposes amnesty for the 13 million who are in our country illegally and proposed a bill to close the border first. He worked to pass the border security fence that the President will sign into law this week.

Rick Santorum believes we can never let Iran build a nuclear bomb.
Rick is the author of bipartisan supported legislation signed into law that takes a great step forward in our effort to deal with what he believes is the most dangerous threat to our country, our allies, and the stability of the international community: Iran.
Rick believes we must support a transition to democracy in Iran so that the government of Iran can no longer continue to bully the rest of the world with its radical extremist views, and threats of destroying the United States, Israel, and the Jewish people.
Rick also authored the Syrian Accountability Act to halt Syrian support for terrorism, end its occupation of Lebanon, and stop its development of weapons of mass destruction.

Rick Santorum believes it is imperative that America move quickly to become less dependent on foreign oil.
To this end he has helped secure 100 million dollars to build America’s first ever clean coal to super clean fuel plant, to be located right here in Pennsylvania.
Rick also supports ecologically safe drilling for oil off our gulf coast and in an area of Alaska no bigger than a typical airport.
Rick introduced the Empower America Act to provide historic levels of funding to research and develop renewable fuels to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil.

Bob Casey’s position on fighting the war is nothing short of dangerous for America.
Casey said he would have voted for it, but now says he would vote against it “knowing what he knows now.” However he did say we
weren’t misled, until he decided later that we were.
Bob Casey, Jr. does not support allowing us to intercept terrorist phone calls. Without this capability, the attempted London plane bombings would never have been prevented.
Bob Casey has joined with Ted Kennedy in supporting a bill that gives amnesty to the over 11 million who are in our country illegally.

Bob Casey, Jr.’s rhetoric on Iran speaks volumes about his inexperience and lack of knowledge in confronting terrorist threats.
He recently said that Iran is a lesser threat than other countries, and we should be spending less time focused on the threat it poses.
In a recent debate, Casey could not even name the former Iranian President who just toured the United States.
Casey’s ignorance on this issue should be a great concern to all Pennsylvanians.

Bob Casey, Jr. has come out in opposition to drilling off our own coastline.
Despite the fact that Cuba and China are drilling for oil just 60 miles off our coast.
Casey’s opposition to drilling for oil in a small part of Alaska, no bigger than the Pittsburgh airport.
Casey’s position will make us even more dependent on terrorist nations for our energy needs and less secure.

Speech Excerpts

On Iran and North Korea:
“North Korea, the world’s leading missile proliferator, and Iran are on the verge of starting nuclear arms races in both Asia and the Middle East – both hubs of terrorist networks that reach around the world – which could easily result in nuclear material, perhaps even a weapon, ending up in the hands of a terrorist organization. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who denies the holocaust and called Israel just last week “illegitimate” and “could not survive”, said he plans on using “the technical factor” to augment ‘national security.’ The technical factor?”

“That is why I drafted legislation that commits America to support freedom in Iran. A free Iran will be our friend, not an implacable enemy. We know that is true, because public opinion polls taken by the regime itself show that more than seventy percent of Iranians want to choose their own system of government and elect their own leaders.”

On Iraq:
“Iraq is the central battlefield in this war against Islamic fascism. Yet the terrorists know they cannot win on the battlefield against our armed men and women, and the Iraqis who fight alongside them. After every IED and with every suicide bomber they seek to break our will and the Iraqis’ will to fight, to get us to hang our heads and finally say ‘enough.’”

On Bob Casey, Jr. Grasp of the Threat:
“From everything I can see, Mr. Casey is unready, unqualified for the high office he seeks at a time when our survival as a free people is at stake.”

On Oil Drilling:
“One of my opponent’s favorite talking points is that “we can’t drill ourselves out of our energy dependence.”

“Let me say to Mr. Casey, and his sound bite driven sleepwalking colleagues; the gathering storm demands it. We have no choice. Our men and women in uniform are laboring, sacrificing and dying to protect our homeland, we have no choice. We have no choice but to explore every form of American energy that can make use independent and secure.”

“That is why I wrote the Empower America Act, which calls for investments of more than $20 billion for research and development, loan guarantees, and grants to create, produce and distribute renewable fuels, cleaner coal, and nuclear energy. It extends tax incentives for the production of renewable energy and alternative fuels, and also for hybrid vehicles.”

On Fighting this War to Win:
“There are many other things that need to be done in this war, but none of them will happen unless we come to grips with the terrible fact that we are at war, and there is no way to escape it, whatever our policies, and whoever our elected representatives. There is no escape because our enemies are fully committed to our destruction, and they will not stop until they have either destroyed us, or have been destroyed.”

“That is our choice: we can win or lose, but we cannot opt out.”

“That is why I have spent so much time talking about the war during this campaign. It is why I have fought heart and soul to pass legislation that will hurt our enemies and strengthen our country. If you reelect me, I will press ahead with all my strength and passion, and you will know that you have a United States Senator who sees the world plain and will fight for our victory – rather than repeat slogans written for him by consultants.”

  1. LargeBill Says:

People can argue that they disagree with Santorum on a particular issue, but they can’t say he changes his mind as the wind blows. The man knows what he believes. Far too many politicians in both parties change their positions at the first sign of voter discontent.

  2. Tim Says:

I agree. That is an admirable trait that is absent in far too many of our politicians.
