NSA issue put on backburner
Congressional Quarterly reports:
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist today agreed to delay floor consideration of three bills governing the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance program until at least next week to give the Intelligence Committee a chance to consider them.
The delay was sought by Senate Intelligence Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who asked Frist to give his panel a look at the bills (S 2453, S 2455, S 3001) after they were approved Sept. 13 by the Judiciary Committee.
“Given the Intelligence Committee’s expertise in these matters, which would supplement the careful work of the Judiciary Committee, I agree that your committee should have an opportunity to review and consider these bills with an eye towards reaching bipartisan resolution on items within your jurisdiction,” Frist, R-Tenn., wrote in a letter Tuesday to Roberts.
